Welcome

Thistle Books is a secondhand bookshop tucked down on Otago Street in the West End, by the Kelvin, behind an old black door with a hand-painted bookshop sign on the wall, and it has been buying and selling books here since 1998.

Its team searches out good and well-loved titles from across the country.

Inside it is an old-fashioned bookshop, a warren of shelves from floor to ceiling, with narrow aisles, piles of books stacked on tables and on the floor, boxes of prints and papers, and runs of old leather-bound volumes alongside modern paperbacks. The collection of Scottish history and culture is especially strong, but there is something on most subjects, Tolkien included, and it rewards a slow browse. If a title is not on the shelves, the Book Finder service will track it down for you. It is round the corner from Roots, Fruits and Flowers and Great Western Road, and a good stop on a walk along the river. Thistle Books opens Monday to Saturday from eleven until five, and is closed on Sunday.

Hidden Scotland, the magazine

Scotland, in print.

We want to show you the best that Scotland has to offer. The makers and the creatives, the enduring experiences, the evocative tales, the concealed corners. The roads less travelled that take you to places that matter. The adventures that gather you up and sweep you away. The blend of the wild and the artistic that makes Scotland what it is. We’d love for you to join us.
