Queen Victoria sailed on Loch Katrine, in the Trossachs, in 1859 to see the new waterworks for Glasgow.

She and Prince Albert went out on the steamer Rob Roy II in October 1859 to the great new waterworks on the lochside. The loch still sends millions of gallons of fresh water to Glasgow every day, and clean water transformed Scotland's largest city.

Monachyle Mhor, the hotel above Loch Voil at Balquhidder in the Trossachs, began in 1983 when a family bought a hill farm and signed for it on a cigarette packet.

In 1983 Rob and Jean Lewis bought Monachyle Mhor, a hill farm at Balquhidder in the Trossachs, signing on the back of a cigarette packet to clinch the deal. Rob farmed sheep and cattle, Jean offered bed and breakfast in the farmhouse, and the business grew from there. Their sons Tom and Dick carry it on today as a hotel and restaurant in its own 2,000-acre estate, overlooking Loch Voil and Loch Doine. It is still a farm first, with blackface sheep and Highland cattle on the hill, pigs, and Rhode Island Red hens laying the hotel's breakfast eggs. As Tom puts it, 'We're really farmers who have diversified.'

Red deer are Britain's largest land mammal, and in autumn the stags roar through the rut. The nearest of our places to them is Beinn Dorain, 2 miles away.

Red-necked wallabies have lived wild on Inchconnachan, an island in Loch Lomond, since the 1940s, when the Countess of Arran brought them there.

The wallabies were introduced by Fiona Gore, Countess of Arran, and their descendants still roam the island, which makes Inchconnachan one of the few places outside Australia with a wild population. The magazine Countryfile has nicknamed it Wallaby Island. Nobody lives there, and estimates of how many wallabies remain vary widely. The island is reached by boat from the village of Luss, but it was sold in 2020 and is privately owned, so check access before planning a trip.
