Piazza

Add to List

Introduction

Piazza sits on the North Pier, sharing the waterfront with its seafood sister restaurant Ee-usk, both run by the same family. The pairing works in the family's favour. The MacLeods have spent the best part of 25 years in the seafood trade, so the fish specials at the Italian side arrive with better credentials than most, poached haddock over linguine being the sort of thing that turns up on the board. The core menu is pizza and pasta done without fuss, plus desserts and a decent drinks list, and the billing as Oban's first choice for families is one the place leans into. Kids are genuinely welcome rather than tolerated. The real selling point, though, is the position. The pier pushes out into the bay, so the tables get open water on three sides and ferries sliding past the windows on their way to Mull. Lunch runs 10.30am to 3pm in season, dinner 5.30pm to 9pm, and collection is available for anyone taking a pizza back to their lodgings. Booking is sensible in July and August, on account of everyone else having the same idea.

Location

Piazza is on the North Pier, Oban, PA34 5QD, right on the seafront in the middle of town. Everything in central Oban is within a few minutes on foot, the train station included, with Glasgow around three hours away on the West Highland Line or 2 hours 30 by car. Hours shift with the seasons, lunch closing at 2.30pm off-season, so check before travelling. Takeaway collection can be ordered through their website.

What's nearby

Ee-usk is next door for the full seafood treatment, lobster and langoustine landed from Luing and Loch Linnhe. The Kerrera passenger ferry leaves from the same pier, George Street starts a minute away with its shops and galleries, and the Oban Distillery, founded in 1794, is a short walk behind on Stafford Street. McCaig's Tower looks down from the hill above, a stiff ten-minute climb repaid with the best view of the bay, and the CalMac terminal at the south end of town covers sailings to seven islands.
