Jamieson's of Shetland
The family's knitwear and yarn shop on Commercial Street in Lerwick, selling pure Shetland yarn spun at its own mill at Sandness, and Fair Isle knitwear.
For anyone who knits, a visit to Jamieson's on Commercial Street in Lerwick is one of the great pleasures of a trip to Shetland.
The family business began at Sandness, on the far west side of the islands, in the 1890s, when Robert Jamieson traded handspun knitwear from local crofters, and the shop in Lerwick opened in 1952. In 1981 the family opened their own spinning mill at Sandness, Shetland's only commercial woollen mill, where the wool of native Shetland sheep is scoured, dyed, carded and spun under one roof. The shop is where it all comes together, with a long wall of pure Shetland yarn in a rainbow of shades, Fair Isle knitwear made in the islands, patterns, books and needles. Five generations on, Peter and Elaine and their children still run the business. Bring your pattern and give yourself plenty of time to choose your colours. It's open Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 5pm.
