Shetland Textile Museum
The textile museum lives in the Böd of Gremista, a restored fishing booth on the north edge of Lerwick that was the birthplace of Arthur Anderson, who founded P&O.
The collection is knitting: Fair Isle yokes, lace shawls fine enough to pass through a wedding ring, spinning wheels, the patterns and the hands that made them. Volunteers are usually knitting in the front room and will explain anything. It opens through the summer only. For anyone who has wondered why Shetland wool is spoken of the way it is, an hour here answers it.
