Shetland Seabird Tours
The Noss boat: gannets at eye level, out of Victoria Pier.
Noss is a wall of cliff a few miles from Lerwick with thousands of gannets on it, and it is best seen from the water.
The boat leaves from the small boat harbour on Victoria Pier and runs round Bressay to the Noup of Noss, where the birds come off the rock and past the deck close enough to hear. It is naturalist-led rather than a sightseeing run, so what you are looking at gets explained, and the skipper knows where the porpoises and the otters tend to be. Dress for the sea rather than for the town: it is colder out there than it looks from the pier.
