On the corner of Constitution Street and Queen Charlotte Street in Leith, a curving shopfront painted pale blue, with tall arched windows and Coffee House lettered above the door, is the Hideout.

It is a family-run cafe, friendly and unhurried, and it has a sister in the Old Town, tucked off the Royal Mile below the castle.

The Hideout keeps things simple and does them well: speciality coffee, treats from the counter and sandwiches made to order. The room behind the big windows is bright and easy, a good place to sit with a cup and watch the trams go by on Constitution Street, and the soundtrack is part of the charm, with old smash hits playing on cassette tapes.

The cafe opens every day from half past eight in the morning until five, a few minutes' walk from the Shore and the Water of Leith.
