An eFoil looks like a surfboard, but under it hangs a long mast with a small wing and an electric propeller.

Stand up, open the throttle, and the board lifts clear of the water and flies silently along on its foil, a foot or two above the surface. On the Firth of Forth, eFoil Scotland teaches people to do exactly that.

The lessons run from South Queensferry, Aberdour and Burntisland, on both shores of the Forth, with the three great bridges standing over the water. They start on the beach and in the shallows before heading out. For anyone who would rather sit down, there is also a water bike, pedalled across the surface on the same kind of foil.

The company also hires out paddleboards and wetsuits. Lessons are booked through its own site, and the meeting point is arranged for the day.
