Up a flight of stairs from Candleriggs in the Merchant City, Dakhin cooks the food of South India, and it is the only Indian restaurant in the UK whose whole menu is gluten free, accredited by Coeliac UK, and nut free too.

The cooking comes from Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and the rest of the south, and it is quite different from the curry-house menu: rice rather than naan, with coconut, lentils, curry leaves and southern spices.

The dosa is the thing to order, a great golden crêpe of fermented rice and lentil batter rolled round a spiced potato filling and served with sambar and coconut chutney. There are uttapam, thick and soft, crisp bondas and pakora, thali trays of small dishes round a mound of rice, and chicken, lamb, seafood and vegetable curries. At lunch there is a chef's selection. Dakhin serves lunch and dinner on weekdays and all afternoon and evening at weekends.

Dakhin serves lunch from noon to 2pm and dinner from 5pm on weekdays, and from 1pm through the evening at the weekend.
