Brunch on the Southside.

Glasgow's cafés are a joy, especially for brunch. Head to Shawlands for an open-kitchen brunch spot and a Ukrainian sourdough bakery, to Great Western Road for coffee roasters and cake, or to the West End for the café of a roaster that has been going since 1841. There's bean-to-bar chocolate in the railway arches and a café in an old park pavilion. Go early at weekends, as the queues are part of the fun.

The University Café on Byres Road, in Glasgow's West End, has barely changed since 1918, and still makes its ice cream to the original recipe.

It is still run by the family who started it, and four generations of the Verrecchias have kept it going while other cafés have come and gone around it. Karen, who owns the Hoos design shops in the West End, counts it among the oldest establishments in the city. Inside there is wood panelling, red leather booths and formica tables. The ice cream is what it is famous for, made with double cream and served in a cone with a flake or in a glass boat drizzled with raspberry sauce.
