The Rendezvous Café

A vintage cinema café on Church Street in Inverness, on the site of the Northern Meeting Rooms where the Beatles played in 1960, with breakfasts all day.

On Church Street, a yellow front with a vintage film camera on the sign announces the Rendezvous, a cinema-themed café that has been serving Inverness since 2007.

The walls are hung with pictures of old Hollywood and projection reels from the town's vanished picture houses, the Playhouse and the La Scala.

The building has a story of its own. From 1790 the Northern Meeting Rooms stood here, home of the great Highland balls and of the town's liveliest music nights. On 21 May 1960 a young Liverpool band called the Silver Beetles played upstairs, backing a singer called Johnny Gentle; within weeks they had become the Beatles. The rooms were later pulled down, and a record shop, Record Rendezvous, took their place.

Today breakfast is the thing, served all day: a full Scottish or a vegetarian one, pancakes or porridge, with brunch, soups, panini and salads. It opens every day.
