Pine martens are regular visitors at The Old Post Office, a stone cottage for two on the Kingairloch Estate near Ardgour.

The Old Post Office is one of the old cottages on the Kingairloch Estate, near Ardgour. When the estate restored its cottages, each was done in a slightly different way, but the central stone walls were kept, built of stone likely quarried at the estate's own Pier Quarry. Today it is a lochside cottage for two, all on one level, with a glazed front from the lounge onto the patio. That makes the lounge a good place to sit and watch, because the estate says pine martens are regular visitors, and red deer and plenty of birds are about too.

Borradill, the woodland cabins above Loch Sunart on Ardnamurchan, takes its name from a seven-foot Viking prince said to be buried on the moor above them.

A thousand years ago, the story goes, a Viking prince called Borradill was brought home by boat. He was seven feet tall, and he had been killed on Morvern by the Celtic warrior Somerled. His body was buried on the moor above what is now Borradill, 25 acres of woodland at Glenborrodale on the Ardnamurchan peninsula. Nobody knows for sure where he lies: a burial mound and a standing stone have both been suggested, and which mound marks his grave is still debated. The land carries his name today, and Borradill Cottage, a timber cabin for two to four, sits in the woods below that moor.

Inside Curlew Cottage.

Curlew Cottage is a white, single-storey cottage for five in the glen on the Kingairloch Estate, on the Morvern side of Loch Linnhe near Ardgour. The mountains rise straight up behind it, and from the kitchen sink you look out across the fields to the sea. Inside, the living room, dining area and kitchen are one open space, with a wood-burning stove on a red-tiled hearth for the evenings and oil central heating for the rest.

Glenhurich Lodge, below Beinn Resipol near Loch Shiel, stands in one of the few temperate rainforests left in the UK.

Glenhurich Lodge is tucked away between Ardnamurchan and Lochaber, at the foot of Beinn Resipol, the highest peak on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, on the banks of Loch Shiel. The woods around it are rarer than they look. The glen is one of the few remaining temperate rainforests in the UK, the kind often called Celtic rainforest, and the owners say it has stayed largely intact because it is so remote. The way in shows why: the last eight miles are a single-track road over the hill from Strontian, past Loch Doilet. That same remoteness is what families and groups of friends come here for.

The RiverBeds lodges at Woodlands Glencoe, near Ballachulish, fit a bedroom, kitchen and wet room into just 12 square metres.

RiverBeds are micro cabins dotted along a river in the woods at Woodlands Glencoe, near Ballachulish. Each one is only 12 square metres, and the owners gave themselves a bold brief: to build a castle inside a cabin. A bedroom, a kitchenette and an en-suite wet room all fit into the one space, with a Simba hybrid mattress, Egyptian cotton sheets, warm wooden floors and insulation thick enough for deep silence. Outside, each lodge has a private veranda over the river and its own Jacuzzi hot tub, heated by a heat pump that uses a quarter of the energy of an ordinary heater. The owners call it a Tardis.
