A Robert Adam townhouse at 7 Charlotte Square, restored by the National Trust for Scotland; closed for conservation work and planned to reopen in 2027.
The Georgian House is number 7 Charlotte Square, a New Town townhouse designed by Robert Adam and restored by the National Trust for Scotland to show how the people upstairs and downstairs lived in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
The Lamont family entertained in its grand family rooms, surrounded by paintings by Allan Ramsay, Henry Raeburn and Alexander Nasmyth. Below stairs, the kitchen and the servants' rooms show the work that kept the household running, and the Trust's collection of household things runs from the everyday to the curious. Between the dining room and the bedchamber is the necessary passage, home to a portable flush toilet of 1805, from a time when the house had no bathroom.
The house is closed just now for conservation work inside and out, and is planned to reopen in 2027. Its front, on the north side of Charlotte Square, can be seen from the pavement at any time.
Check the Trust's page for the reopening date before you go.
