Reekie Linn

A waterfall on the River Isla north of Alyth, the smoky linn, where the river drops into a deep gorge in two falls that join into one when in spate.

Welcome

North of Alyth, the River Isla comes down out of Glen Isla and throws itself over a lip of rock into a deep, dark gorge.

The Reekie Linn takes its name from the Scots for the smoky waterfall, for when the river is high the spray rises from the plunge pool like smoke drifting up between the trees.

In ordinary weather the water falls in two leaps, one above the other, but after heavy rain they join into a single roaring fall. The gorge below is sheer-sided and wooded with birch, oak and beech, glowing in autumn.

A short path leads from the car park at Bridge of Craigisla through the woods along the rim of the gorge to viewpoints above the falls. The drops are steep and unfenced in places, so children and dogs are best kept close.
