On St Cuthbert Street in Kirkcudbright, Paul Jones Bakery is the kind of traditional baker every town should have, with its name lettered across the window of a tall stone building.

The pies have a strong following; one visitor noted the traditional Scotch pie was the one the local school pupils queued for at lunchtime, and it was excellent. Visitors this year have praised the home-baked cakes and biscuits, the apple turnovers and the scones, all fresh, with friendly staff and very reasonable prices.

The bakery opens early, at six in the morning from Monday to Saturday, and closes in the afternoon. It is a good place to pick up a picnic lunch before exploring Kirkcudbright. It is closed on Sundays, so plan ahead at the weekend.
