Harbour Cottage Gallery

A cottage on the waterfront that was going to be demolished, and shows paintings instead.

Welcome

Harbour Cottage sits on Castle Bank looking over the moorings, a low white eighteenth-century building with a blue door.

It was due to be demolished until a group of local artists and businessmen bought it and turned it into a gallery, which makes it the oldest established gallery in a town that has rather a lot of them. It is run by volunteers and hung afresh every couple of weeks through the season, mostly with work by artists from Galloway and the south-west, and there are two floors of it - the upper one under the roof slope with the light coming in off the water. Entry is free.

The oldest gallery in the town.

In a town with several, this is the oldest established one, and it is run by volunteers.

Paintings of horses nuzzling, a Highland cow and a foal hang on a gallery wall, an easel and rack of postcards standing in the corner.

The exhibitions change through the season, mostly showing work by artists from Galloway and the south-west, and there is no charge.
