House for an Art Lover
Mackintosh's design of 1901 for a German competition, never built in his lifetime, raised at last in Bellahouston Park between 1989 and 1996.
In 1901 the German publisher Alexander Koch ran a competition in his magazine for the design of a house for an art lover, and Charles Rennie Mackintosh sent in a portfolio of drawings for the house and every room in it.
It was never built in his lifetime. Nearly ninety years later Graham Roxburgh set out to build it from those drawings, and between 1989 and 1996 it went up at the north end of Bellahouston Park, white-harled and tall on the grass.
Inside are the rooms Mackintosh imagined, the Music Room among them, with exhibitions that change through the year, and the grounds around it run from mature woodland to sculpted lawns, planting and herbaceous borders. The Art Lover's Café is open every day from ten until five, which makes the house an easy stop on a walk through the park. It also stages performances.

The café is open daily from 10am to 5pm and takes table bookings. The house is also used for weddings and events, so check before going.
