Glasgow Green
The oldest of Glasgow's parks, given to the people in 1450, on the Clyde with Nelson's column, the McLennan Arch and the Doulton Fountain.
Glasgow Green runs along the north bank of the Clyde east of the Saltmarket, 55 hectares of open grass and paths and by far the oldest of the city's parks.
In 1450 Bishop Turnbull gave the common lands here to the people of Glasgow, and for centuries they used them for washing and bleaching linen, grazing cattle, drying fishing nets and swimming. Glasgow's first washhouse went up on the banks of the Camlachie Burn in 1732.
It has long been where the city gathers. Bonnie Prince Charlie reviewed his army here in 1746, crowds came in their hundreds of thousands to hear about reform in the 1800s, and the suffragettes made it a meeting place. Walk in under the McLennan Arch, a piece of an Adam brothers' building rebuilt as a triumphal arch, past Nelson's column of 1806, the first monument to him in Britain, to the terracotta Doulton Fountain in front of the People's Palace.
