George Mewes Cheese on Byres Road is a cheesemonger with a simple ethos: exquisite cheese, nothing less.

Behind a white front with a striped awning, the counters are stacked with wheels and wedges, and it specialises in unusual cheeses that cannot be found on most supermarket shelves. Every one has been personally tasted and approved by George himself.

The cheeses are artisan ones, made by small producers: great clothbound cheddars like the one from the Isle of Mull, blues veined through, soft rinded cheeses and hard mountain wheels, each with a handwritten card saying where it comes from and how it is made. Staff are happy to offer a taste before you choose. Alongside there are breads, oatcakes, crackers, honeys, chutneys, jars of olives and preserves, and cheese accessories. There is a second shop in Stockbridge in Edinburgh, and a monthly mystery selection online. George Mewes opens Monday to Saturday from nine until five, and Sunday from ten.
