Dornoch Castle Hotel

The old bishop's palace across the green from Dornoch Cathedral, now a hotel with a restaurant over the walled garden, a famous whisky bar and its own distillery.

Welcome

Across the green from Dornoch Cathedral stands a tall, turreted tower of honey-coloured stone, half hidden under ivy.

It looks like a castle, and it is called one, but it began as the palace of the bishops who served the cathedral, and it still looks across the green to the cathedral.

Today it is a hotel, and its rooms range from tartan-hung chambers with four-poster beds and bare stone walls to lighter, plainer rooms. The Garden Restaurant looks over the walled garden and cooks with local produce, and the Vault below is kept for private dinners with wine and whisky to match.

But it is the bar that has made Dornoch Castle famous among whisky lovers, with a long list of rare bottles. The hotel went on to start its own Dornoch Distillery, one of the smallest in Scotland, where whisky is made in an older style from heritage barley.

Hidden Scotland

From our guide to Sutherland

Across the green from the cathedral, Dornoch Castle began life as the palace of the bishops, and its turreted tower of golden stone is now a hotel. The Garden Restaurant looks over the walled garden and cooks with local produce. The real fame belongs to the bar, whose long list of rare whiskies draws enthusiasts from far away. The hotel's owners went on to start the Dornoch Distillery, one of the smallest in Scotland, making whisky in an older style from heritage barley. Pull up a stool, ask for advice and take your time.
