On Castle Street, in the middle of Dornoch, a long, low building of warm sandstone has two words spelled out across its front: cocoa mountain.

This is the Dornoch shop of the chocolate makers from Balnakeil, far away on the north coast, and it carries the same handmade chocolates and truffles.
Inside, the chocolates sit in rows under glass, each with its little label, and the tins of hot chocolate, called The Best, stand on the shelves. The thing to order is the chaser: a hot chocolate that comes with four chocolates of your own choosing. There are cakes too, and croissants filled with dark chocolate, or chocolate and toffee.
The shop opens every day from nine until six, and the cathedral, the old bishop's palace and the long beach are all a few minutes' walk away.
