Welcome

Ardtornish is a garden to lose a morning in, climbing a rocky hillside above the loch.

Octavius Smith, a London distiller, chose this spot for his house in 1856, and his son Valentine went on to shape the garden around it. When Owen and Emmeline Hugh Smith bought the estate in 1930, they added a great deal more, setting rhododendrons among maples, eucryphias and wild roses. Look out for the veteran Himalayan rhododendrons. Tall old conifers shelter native birch and plants from far-off places, with the pink sandstone of the house rising above them, and at almost every turn the path opens onto Loch Aline, with the hills of Mull beyond. Take a flask and claim one of the benches by the viewpoints. From February to December, the estate's own café, the Coal Shed, serves lunch made with lamb, beef and venison from Ardtornish.
