Aoineadh Mòr

The stone ruins of a cleared township in Morvern, on Forestry and Land Scotland's waymarked paths north of Lochaline.

Welcome

Aoineadh Mòr, said Inniemore, was a farming township until 1824, when a new owner bought the land and turned every family out for sheep.

The ruins lay under Lochaline Forest until foresters felled the trees in 1994. Inside the old head-dyke are the remains of more than twenty stone buildings, the homes, kilns and barns of families who kept cattle and grew crops. Two paths reach them, so you can go out on one and back on the other. The lower, Mary's Path, runs through native oak and birch and is named for Mary Cameron, who lived here and told of the eviction. The higher one is named for James Cameron, who bore his mother on his back when the families were put out, and it rises through the plantation to a lookout above Loch Doire nam Mart. You can hear Mary's account, in English or Gaelic, on Forestry and Land Scotland's website. It's a place to take slowly.
