Faskally Wood – Loch Dunmore and the Foresters' Trail

About 2.2 miles on foot.

Faskally car parkStartLoch FaskallyWhere you turn

Faskally Wood, just north-west of Pitlochry, is a 19th-century model woodland of big old trees around a small, still loch, with a wooden footbridge across its reedy edge.

Two waymarked trails leave the same car park: an easy, level loop of Loch Dunmore, and a longer one through the trees down to the shore of Loch Faskally. It's a gentle morning, and the short loop suits pushchairs and wheelchairs.

Time

The walk

The walk starts at Forestry and Land Scotland's Faskally car park, off the B8019 north-west of Pitlochry (nearest postcode PH16 5JZ). Parking is £1 for an hour or £3 for the day, by coins, card or RingGo, and free with a Blue Badge. There are toilets, accessible ones too, and picnic tables.

The Dunmore Trail is a 1.2 km circuit of Loch Dunmore on firm, mostly smooth gravel with a few short slopes, about half an hour: the one for a pushchair or a wheelchair. The Foresters' Trail is 2.4 km, about an hour, on rougher gravel and earth with roots, flights of wooden steps and some steep slopes, and runs down to the shore of Loch Faskally. The owners of Faskally House laid the wood out in the 19th century, and in the 1950s the young foresters at the school in the house helped to look after it.

Watch for herons, goldeneye and kingfishers on the water, and keep children close by it. Until 8 November the Enchanted Forest light show is set up here: the car parks shut from 4pm to 11pm and some paths may be closed or diverted, so come in the morning and have the car out before four.

If it rains

Most of it is under the trees, and the Dunmore Trail is firm underfoot even in rain.
