The whole of Larch House across its meadow: the larch-clad gable and long roof with roof lights, the lower wing beside it, a ring of river stones in the grass and oaks behind.

Places to Stay with a Fire Pit

A fire pit outside, on a long summer evening or a clear cold night, is one of the simplest pleasures of a stay in the country. These are the places where you can light one and stay out until it burns down.

Evenings last longer round a fire outside. A fire pit, a few chairs pulled round it, something to drink and nowhere to be. In summer the light holds until eleven, in winter the sky is full of stars, and either way you end up staying out far later than you meant to.

We've gathered our favourite places to stay with a fire pit, from cabins in the woods to cottages with the sea at the end of the garden. Every one of them has somewhere to light a fire outside.
