Did you know18 hours agoAn old prophecy on the Isle of Jura said the last of the Campbells, who founded its distillery, would leave penniless and one-eyed, and in 1938 it came true.
Members of Clan Campbell founded the Jura Distillery in Craighouse in 1810, and the family held a strong influence over the island and its land up until the 1930s. The prophecy said the last of them would leave with nothing, and blind in one eye. In 1938 the last Campbell, Charles, left Jura with no money, having lost the sight of one eye to a war injury, just as had been predicted. The distillery, closed by then, was brought back by a group of islanders and opened again in 1963, and it later named a peaty, salty single malt Prophecy after the old island tale.
