Paps of Jura

Three of the mountains that look over, the Paps are found on the Western side of the island and have a distinctive cone shape that gives them their nickname. 'Paps' comes from the Nordic language meaning 'breasts', as the particular shape of the mountains appeared similar to that of part of the female anatomy. At their highest point, these quartzite mountains are 2,575 feet high and can be seen for miles around – even from the Isle of Skye and as far across as the coast of Northern Ireland, on a clear day. The Paps are also part of the course for the Isle of Jura Fell Race, held every summer.
