Isle of Jura

Craighouse

Jura's one village, strung along Small Isles Bay, with the distillery, the hotel, the shop and the pier.

Welcome

Craighouse is the only village on Jura, and almost everything the island offers a visitor is gathered along its one street.

The whitewashed distillery stands at the centre, with the Jura Hotel across the road and the community shop and the Antlers a few steps on. Down at the old stone pier, built between 1812 and 1814, fishing boats tie up near the pontoons where the summer passenger ferry from Tayvallich comes in. A craft shop, a rum distillery and a photographer's gallery share the Pier Garage. The village looks out across Small Isles Bay to a string of low islets, with the hills rising behind. It is about eight miles from the Feolin ferry by the island's single road.

Before you go

Everything is within a few minutes on foot along the shore road.

The old pier dates from 1812 to 1814.

It was put up under the Commissioners for Highland Roads and Bridges, the body that built harbours and roads across the Highlands in those years.

Did you know

You can arrive without a car.

From April to September a fast catamaran runs from Tayvallich on the mainland straight to the pontoons here, in under an hour.

Did you know

This is where the island fills up.

Water, diesel and petrol are all sold in Craighouse, and there is nowhere else on Jura to get them.
