Looking out towards Dundee across the Firth of Tay – and with floor-to-ceiling windows and an outdoor terrace to make the most of the view – this restaurant and bar makes for a memorable meal spot. The restaurant has some great Scottish dishes, with plenty of seafood and several veggie options, while the extensive drinks list features cocktails and mocktails.

The Ship Inn, on the quayside at Elie in Fife, has its own cricket team, and it plays its matches on the beach.

There is plenty to recommend the inn, in the former royal burgh of Elie, besides its cricketers. The food and drink menus showcase top Scottish produce, and the views out over the sea are huge. It is a lovely place to stay, too, with six guest rooms that are mighty appealing, and the pick of them is the Admiral Room on the top floor. Elie sits on the East Neuk of Fife, the stretch of coast laced together by the most scenic parts of the Fife Coastal Path.

Salt and Pine, in Tentsmuir Forest in Fife, began with a £500 trailer and a hammock.

The founders, Ben and Margaux, started when a man in a pub offered Ben a trailer, and they bought it for £500. Margaux had never made a crepe, so they watched videos online and taught themselves from there. In the early days they would open up and lie in a hammock in the trees, waiting for their first customer. They settled in Tentsmuir Forest, near Leuchars, for their crepe shack.

Robert and Alison Smith, who own Anstruther Fish Bar in the East Neuk of Fife, have centuries-old family ties to the East Neuk fishing trade.

That history is why their multi-award-winning fish and chip shop in Anstruther can fairly be called a labour of love. Haddock is the speciality, of course, but you will find dressed crab and more from the sea besides. Anstruther is the largest of the pretty East Neuk fishing villages, known for its colourful harbour fronts, its bobbing masts and its award-winning fish and chips. Take time, too, to visit the Scottish Fisheries Museum, home to an extensive collection of historic boats and seafaring paraphernalia.
