Introduction

Set along the serene shoreline of the Kyles of Bute, The Hollies is a grand Victorian villa that effortlessly blends historic character with contemporary comfort. Sleeping up to 18 guests, this elegant retreat offers the perfect base for families, groups or special gatherings looking to immerse themselves in Argyll’s rugged, lesser-known coastline. Step inside and you’ll find spacious, light-filled rooms with high ceilings, stained glass, and bay windows that frame ever-changing views of sea and sky. There’s a warmth to the house – from the roaring open fire in the sitting room to the welcoming kitchen-diner, built for long, sociable meals and lazy breakfasts.

But The Hollies is more than just a beautiful place to stay. Outside, the landscaped garden hides a pétanque court, a fire pit, and a terrace for alfresco dining, while inside, guests can unwind with a game of pool, stream a film, or simply stretch out with a dram and watch the boats pass by. Beyond the garden gate lies Tighnabruaich, a village rich with maritime history and charm, where walking trails weave through forest and over heather hills, and seals bask on rocky skerries just offshore.

Whether you’re kayaking in the calm waters, feasting on local seafood, exploring nearby castles, or curling up with a book as the rain taps gently on the windows, The Hollies invites you to slow down, breathe in the sea air, and discover the quietly captivating rhythm of life on Argyll’s Secret Coast.

Facilities & Services

The Hollies is designed with comfort, style, and sociability at its heart, offering a range of thoughtful amenities to make your stay as easy and enjoyable as possible.

Inside, you’ll find eight spacious bedrooms (six en-suite), a fully equipped chef-standard kitchen with double fridges and dishwashers, and an elegant dining room with space for 18 – perfect for long, lingering meals with a view. A cozy sitting room with an open log fire provides a quiet retreat, while the games room (complete with pool table, Xbox, and 65” Smart TV) and high-speed Wi-Fi throughout ensure entertainment for all ages. Underfloor heating in the bathrooms and modern central heating keep things toasty whatever the weather, and there's even a handy laundry room for longer stays.

Outside, the large terrace is ideal for alfresco dining, with seating for the whole group, a Big Green Egg BBQ and pizza stone, and a fire pit for atmospheric evenings under the stars. The expansive lawn hosts what may be Scotland’s largest pétanque court – great for friendly competition – and there’s table tennis too.

A ground-floor en-suite bedroom offers added accessibility, and the property has an EV charging point for electric vehicles. Guests are welcomed with a hamper of local treats, and concierge-style support is available – from in-house catering to private boat trips. Whether you're planning a celebration, a restful escape, or an activity-filled holiday, The Hollies has everything you need for a memorable stay.

Bedrooms

Growing up in 1980s Scotland, we were very lucky to be teenagers at the height of Scotland's assault on the music charts and the many great bands that emerged at that time. The impact of some were short and sharp and some were more enduring. To celebrate our passion for music (Scottish and otherwise) we decided to name our bedrooms after 8 of our favourite bands of the 1980s.

All our bedrooms feature a cast-iron radiator and en-suites has underfloor heating and rainfall showers.

You will find a playlist on the house Spotify account of some music from these great bands, and other Scottish bands from the same period. In advance if you want to get in the mood, search Spotify for 'The Hollies Argyll Room Playlist' and subscribe.

Location

The Hollies sits proudly on Shore Road in the village of Tighnabruaich, a postcard-perfect spot on Argyll’s Secret Coast, overlooking the shimmering waters of the Kyles of Bute. Framed by forested hills and gently curving bays, this quiet corner of the Cowal Peninsula feels blissfully off the beaten track, yet it’s remarkably accessible – around two hours from Glasgow by car or a combination of train and ferry. The journey itself is part of the experience, taking in lochside roads, mountain passes, and some of Scotland’s most beautiful coastal views.

Once you arrive, everything slows to the gentle rhythm of village life. Tighnabruaich and its neighbouring village Kames are home to a handful of shops, galleries and excellent places to eat, all within walking distance. The seafront is just steps from the garden gate, and at high tide the sound of the water reaches the windows. From the house, you can wander the shoreline, stroll to the pier, or head uphill to one of the most iconic viewpoints in the Highlands.

This is a location that invites exploration. Whether you're heading off on a boat trip, kayaking around the Burnt Islands, hiking through ancient woodland, or discovering hidden beaches like Ostel Bay, The Hollies is perfectly placed for outdoor adventures. And when the day’s done, you can retreat to the terrace or fireside, dram in hand, to watch the sun slip behind the hills across the loch.

Good to know

The Hollies is a spacious, self-catering home designed with groups in mind, sleeping up to 18 guests across eight bedrooms, six of which are en-suite. One of these bedrooms is located on the ground floor with its own shower room, making it particularly suitable for guests with limited mobility. Check-in is from 4pm and check-out is by 10am; early arrivals or late departures may be possible outside of peak periods and can usually be arranged closer to your stay.

The house welcomes one well-behaved dog by prior arrangement, and the surrounding area is wonderfully dog-friendly, with coastal walks and wooded paths starting right from the doorstep. Wi-Fi is fast and reliable throughout the property, although mobile reception can vary depending on your provider – ideal if you’re hoping for a light digital detox without going fully off-grid.

All bed linen and towels are provided, along with a starter supply of logs for the fireplace and fire pit. Essentials such as dishwasher tablets, washing-up liquid, and cooking basics are also supplied. The kitchen is exceptionally well equipped for group catering, and if you’d like to take things easier, the team can help arrange private chefs, meal deliveries, or pre-arrival grocery orders.

There’s plenty of private parking on-site and an electric vehicle charging point for guests who need it. As with much of rural Scotland, the weather can shift quickly, so it’s wise to bring waterproofs, sturdy shoes, and a sense of humour. Once you’re here, though, everything slows down – this is a place for long walks, good food, and great company.
