On Simpson Loan, where the new buildings of Quartermile meet the northern edge of the Meadows, a long glass front opens onto tables set out on the pavement.

This is Söderberg, a Scandinavian bakery and cafe, one of a small family of Söderberg cafes in the city.

Everything starts with the baking, done on the premises every day. The counters fill with buns twisted into knots, sourdough loaves, pastries and cakes in the Swedish way, and there are open sandwiches, brunch dishes and good coffee to go with them. Later in the day the kitchen turns to sourdough pizza.

The cafe is open every day from a quarter to eight in the morning until seven at night, dogs are welcome, and on a fine day a coffee and a bun can be carried straight out onto the grass of the Meadows.
