MacLellan's Castle
Welcome
MacLellan's Castle stands in the middle of Kirkcudbright, a ruin you can climb right through.
It's a big tower house, built in 1582 from the stones of the old friary. It was lived in for only a century and has been roofless ever since. The walls are still complete enough to explore: the great hall, the kitchens below, and the laird's lug, where the laird could listen in on his guests. Historic Environment Scotland looks after it, and tickets are sold at the castle. Allow half an hour, or longer with children who like a castle to get lost in. It's on Castle Street, a step from the harbour and the galleries.
