Falls of Leny

The Falls of Leny are a surge of white water in the narrow, wooded Pass of Leny, just north-west of Callander, where the river known as the Garbh Uisge, the rough water, breaks over rocks as it crosses the Highland Boundary Fault on its way down from Loch Lubnaig.
The pass itself was for centuries one of the gateways between the Highlands and the Lowlands, and drovers once brought their cattle through it.
The falls are at their most powerful after a few days of heavy rain, when the whole river seems to pour through the rocks, and in autumn salmon can be seen leaping. They are easy to reach: there is a Forestry and Land Scotland car park at Kilmahog, and laybys on the A84, and a level path along the riverbank leads to the falls in a few minutes. You can also walk out from the middle of Callander, about half an hour to forty minutes each way.
