Introduction

Established in 1912, Dovecot Studios is an internationally regarded tapestry studio that forms the heart of Edinburgh’s artistic community. Supporting creators in multiple mediums, the studio hosts exhibitions throughout the year to celebrate artists from across the globe, or you can pop in to visit their on-site café and shop. Dovecot Studios is a tapestry studio – a space where skilled weavers create beautiful tapestries. The Marquess of Bute founded the studios in 1912 in order to have tapestries made for his house on the Isle of Bute. After World War II it became a space where contemporary artists could come to create their art. Some illustrious artists have used the studios, including Henry Moore, David Hockney, and Graham Sutherland. Artists come not only to create new works but also to exhibit in one of its three exhibition galleries. Visitors can enjoy their regular tours and talks, and also take part in tapestry and embroidery workshops. There is also a café and shop on the site.
