Inside Certhia at Eagle Brae.

Certhia sits on a natural ridge above Eagle Brae in Strathglass, and from its deck the view runs the full length of the glen towards the old outline of Erchless Castle. Like every cabin here, it was built from huge western red cedar logs by Pioneer Log Homes of British Columbia, shipped across the Atlantic and put back together by hand on the hillside. Certhia opened in December 2018. It takes its name from the treecreeper, and red squirrels and pine martens move through the woods around it.

Up on the mezzanine, two single log beds are built into the wall with curtains to draw, the kind of den children love. Parus, a cabin for two at Eagle Brae in Strathglass, is the only one of its log cabins from which all the others can be seen.

Eagle Brae's cedar log cabins are scattered over a hillside in Strathglass, about 20 miles west of Inverness, each in its own spot. Parus, a cabin for two, is tucked among mature trees, and it is the only one from which every other cabin can be seen, through the trees or over the contours of the hill. From its deck you look over the wildflower roof of reception and the duck pond, across the glen towards Mauld. Its name is the Latin for the tit family, and blue, great and coal tits come to its own bird table. On clear nights the dark is deep, and it is one of the best spots on the estate for the stars and the Northern Lights.

Aquila, a cedar log cabin at Eagle Brae near Struy in Strathglass, stands on the edge of a ridge with the whole glen open in front of it. On clear winter nights, guests have watched the Northern Lights from its covered deck. When you come in from the cold, there's a log stove going in the living room and a sauna of its own off one of the bathrooms.
