Church Street, Beauly and the Black Isle.

Inverness is a lovely city to eat in, and much of the best of it is a few minutes from the river. Church Street alone has a whisky bar, a wine bar, hand-made doughnuts and the Black Isle Brewery's own taps. Restaurants line the Ness, from a converted church with a log fire to a glass brasserie looking at the castle. Out of town, eat on Beauly's square, on Fortrose High Street, in a seafront cottage at Rosemarkie or in a hotel dining room at Fort Augustus. Book dinner ahead at weekends, especially in summer.

For Jeni Iannetta of Bad Girl Bakery, the first stop for food in Inverness is the Victorian Market's food hall, and not just because her bakery is there.

Bad Girl Bakery is known for its big cakes and delicious bakes, and with everything made by hand, you need to be quick before they sell out. Besides the original café in Muir of Ord, it runs the anchor café in the food hall of the Victorian Market, a historic indoor market under a beautiful ironwork roof in the middle of Inverness. Jeni loves the variety around her, from vegan street food to local seafood, and steaks and pulled pork from a stallholder's own farm. Further afield, she sends people to the Black Isle. 'If you’re there, then why not go to Black Isle Dairy? I’m obsessed with their dark chocolate sorbet'.
