Black Isle Bar.

The Black Isle Brewery's own bar on Church Street is the place in Inverness to drink its organic beer, brewed on a farm just across the firth. Twenty-six taps pour the brewery's latest beers alongside guests from around the world, with organic cider, wine and whisky too. The wood-fired oven turns out pizzas made, where possible, with vegetables and meat from the brewery's own garden and farm. It is relaxed and friendly, families and dogs are welcome, and there are rooms upstairs if you would rather not go far.

The Walrus & Corkscrew.

Where Church Street meets Church Lane, a pale pink building with barrels at the door and a walrus on the sign is the city's wine bar. It opened in April 2021, when many thought it mad to open anything at all, and it has been busy ever since. The list runs to around two hundred wines, with whisky and Scottish beer too, and platters of Highland cheese and cured meats with local sourdough to go with them. Dogs and children are both welcome. Later in the week it fills up, so book ahead.

Hootananny.

Behind big arched windows on Church Street, Hootananny is the place in Inverness for traditional music, with live sessions every night of the week. The ceilidh bar on the ground floor is high-ceilinged and wooden-floored, with a small stage where fiddlers, pipers, singers and bands play to crowded tables, and on a good night the whole room ends up dancing. There is a ceilidh on Saturday afternoons too. The kitchen serves hearty food such as steak and ale pie and haggis, with Scottish ales on tap. Book a table and arrive early for a seat near the music.
