Doughnuts on Church Street, bakes in Beauly.

There's a good café wherever you are around Inverness. In the city, Church Street has a vintage cinema café on the site of a hall where the young Beatles played in 1960, a bright yellow doughnut shop and a coffee house on a curved corner. On Bridge Street, a bakehouse turns out sourdough and cinnamon rolls. Beyond the city, find an Italian pasticceria and a deli on Beauly's square, sourdough in Fortrose and a timber tearoom with Highland cattle outside at Foyers. A community café in Tomatin sits just off the A9, handy on the drive north. Come early for the best of the baking.

For Jeni Iannetta of Bad Girl Bakery, the first stop for food in Inverness is the Victorian Market's food hall, and not just because her bakery is there.

Bad Girl Bakery is known for its big cakes and delicious bakes, and with everything made by hand, you need to be quick before they sell out. Besides the original café in Muir of Ord, it runs the anchor café in the food hall of the Victorian Market, a historic indoor market under a beautiful ironwork roof in the middle of Inverness. Jeni loves the variety around her, from vegan street food to local seafood, and steaks and pulled pork from a stallholder's own farm. Further afield, she sends people to the Black Isle. 'If you’re there, then why not go to Black Isle Dairy? I’m obsessed with their dark chocolate sorbet'.
