Edinburgh is a lovely city for shopping. There are secondhand bookshops on the West Port, a cookbook shop and a bookshop open until nine every night, and the first cheesemonger of a much-loved family on Victoria Street. Look out for Scottish textiles off the Royal Mile, tartan blankets from Leith and makers' shops in Stockbridge and the old Custom House. Wizard shops line Victoria Street, too. Leave room in your suitcase.
