Strawberry tarts and Lintrathen farm teas.

The cafés of Angus are mostly family-run, and many sit on farms. In Montrose there is sourdough baked with local organic flour, a speciality coffee and art shop opened by Helen Marnie of Ladytron, and a fully gluten-free café where you can paint pottery between cakes. Arbroath has a vintage tea room on West Port with afternoon tea. Near Lintrathen, one farm café sells its own Highland beef and lamb, and another sits by the loch with a lodge. The fruit farm near Carnoustie opens its shop in summer, so time a visit for the berries.

Tomorrow is Another Day, a coffee shop in Montrose, Angus, is named after a song by Ladytron, the internationally successful band of its owner, Helen Marnie.

Back home in Montrose, Helen's shop serves what the magazine's guide to Angus calls the best coffee in town. Tasty pastries go alongside, and there are small crafts to browse. It makes a good start to a morning in a town that rewards an unhurried visit. Montrose Beach is easily reached from the town centre, and its sands stretch for three miles, all the way to the northern boundary of Angus, with the option of a circular walk back inland.
