Angus
Red sandstone and the North Esk.
The wild side of Angus is never far from a town. Just north of Arbroath, the sea has worked the red sandstone into caves, arches and stacks, and the cliffs carry on past Auchmithie towards Ethie. Behind Montrose, a tidal basin fills with pink-footed geese each autumn, and near Monikie red squirrels feed in the pines round an old reservoir. Inland, the North Esk comes down Glen Esk and through a wooded gorge above Edzell. Come to the basin in October, when the geese are at their peak.
