A bronze spear butt dating to the early medieval period has been discovered at East Lomond hillfort near Falkland in Fife.

Unearthed by community volunteers working alongside archaeologists from the University of Aberdeen, the object is thought to be Pictish, likely dating from between the 2nd and 7th centuries AD.

Spear butts are rarely found in Scotland. This one is well made and well preserved, and it helps confirm the types of weapons often shown on carved stones from the period. It adds to the evidence that East Lomond was an important fort, and perhaps a ceremonial site, in Pictish times.
