Alexander Selkirk was born in Lower Largo in 1676, the son of a shoemaker, and 2026 marks 350 years since the Fife fishing village produced its most famous son.

Selkirk spent four years and four months marooned on an uninhabited Pacific island after falling out with his captain, survived, came home, and his story fed directly into Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. A statue of him stands on Main Street, on the site of the cottage where he was born, and the village's hotel has traded on the Crusoe name for years.

Celebrations run through 2026, led by the Largo Heritage Group, with guided walking tours of Lower and Upper Largo, talks, and an anniversary exhibition at the Aurrie Mor from 22 to 29 August. Local artists have been decorating porcelain Selkirk Seagulls, auctioned for Maggie's Fife.
