Union Terrace Gardens are a gorgeous splash of colour right in the heart of Aberdeen. While currently closed for renovation, the sunken gardens have been a focal point for the city since 1879 and are surrounded by some of Aberdeen’s most spectacular architecture – none more so than His Majesty’s Theatre, which sits at the top of Union Terrace Gardens. The theatre forms part of an important trio of buildings, known as education, salvation and damnation, of which the Central Library and St Mark’s Church are also part, and these can also be found across Rosemount Viaduct, opposite Union Terrace Gardens. Statues of Prince Albert, Robert Burns, William Wallace and Edward VII have their home in the gardens’ two-and-a-half acres, along with a floral crest of the city’s coat of arms and a group of 200-year-old elm trees.
