Introduction

Opened in 1892, Aberdeen Central Library is one of a trio of civic buildings at the end of Union Terrace, referred to locally as ‘Education, Salvation, and Damnation’, along with St Mark’s Church and His Majesty’s Theatre. The library – a category C-listed building - is also part of the cultural hub of Aberdeen, located in close proximity to Aberdeen Art Gallery, as well as the theatre. Along with an abundance of books, Aberdeen Central Library also houses a plethora of local maps, birth and death certificates, in excess of 15,000 photographs, and a multitude of local newspapers, with history documented throughout.
