Ceannabeinne Cottage, near Durness on Scotland's north coast, dates from 1827 and is the last building left of the township that once stood here.

Ceannabeinne was once a small Highland township above a beach about three miles east of Durness, on Scotland's far north coast. The township was later abandoned, and of all its buildings only one still stands: a stone cottage dating back to 1827. It has been carefully restored, keeping its thick stone walls and its old longhouse plan, with the rooms in a row. There's a kitchen round an Aga at one end, a calm double bedroom in the middle, and a vaulted living room with a wood-burning stove at the other. A walk along the historical trail through the old township tells the rest of the story.

Links House is a Free Church manse of 1843 in Dornoch, now a hotel less than a hundred yards from the first tee at Royal Dornoch Golf Club and an hour's drive north of Inverness. Its rooms, across the old manse, the Mews House and Glenshiel, are each named for one of Scotland's great salmon rivers, with Hypnos mattresses, antique furniture, notable artwork and touches of tartan.

Shore Cottage, a hideaway for two on Loch Eriboll near Durness, was designed by Matt Stevenson in 2010 to hug the slope down to the water.

Shore Cottage stands on the shore of Loch Eriboll, six miles east of Durness on Scotland's far north coast, under Ben Hope. It was designed by Matt Stevenson in 2010 for Fiona and Robbie Mackay, and its barrel shape follows the slope of the land. That keeps it low in the landscape and puts it right beside the water, with a window onto views that never stay the same for long. The curved shell is built from local stone, and the cottage runs on solar and wind energy. Fiona designed the inside, with polished concrete floors and timber beams holding up the roof. Step inside, and floor-to-ceiling windows look straight out over the loch to the mountains.

Links House in Dornoch is starting night-time wildlife safaris with thermal cameras.

Local guide Kurt Connell drives guests into Sutherland after dark to look for pine martens, deer, foxes and badgers through a 360-degree thermal camera, without leaving the vehicle. It runs from the end of September to April, from £275 a person.

Keeper's Cottage is a stone house for six directly on the shore of Loch Hope, in Sutherland. Each of its three bedrooms, up in the wood-clad eaves, has a private bathroom with a deep copper tub. Downstairs, a double-sided open fire warms the dining room and the sitting room, and outside there's a firepit for evenings under the stars.
