Printed in Issue Thirteen of Hidden Scotland Magazine, Autumn and Winter 2026–27.

Sam Heughan grew up in the grounds of a ruined castle above Loch Ken. Three decades on he's back, building a net-zero distillery in the Galloway hills. He talks to Rosie Morton about coming home.

There’s something magical about returning to the place where your story began. Perhaps it’s the landscape that does it, or the people, or simply knowing where a particular bend in the road will take you. For Sam Heughan, that place is Dumfries and Galloway.

Sam’s extraordinary acting career has seen him travel the world, but as our conversation unfolds it’s clear that his connection to Scotland has remained a constant throughout those years of global fame.
