The Mercat, Culross

A café, provisions and homeware shop in an old butcher’s opposite the Mercat Cross in Culross.

Welcome

The Mercat stands opposite the Mercat Cross at the top of Culross, in a building that used to be the village butcher’s.

The original Art Nouveau wall tiles are still in place, and they set the colours for the whole room: cream, tomato and sage.

It belongs to Laura Wilson, an interior designer who also runs The Dundonald, the guesthouse across the way. Her guests kept asking where the ceramics and linens in their rooms had come from, and the shop is her answer.

So it’s three things at once. It’s a café, with toasties, soup, baguettes, cakes and scones soaked in Earl Grey. It’s a larder of cheese, cured meats, fresh bread, jam and natural wine. And it’s a shop of ceramics, tableware, linens, books and old pieces she has found. It opened in 2025. Opening hours aren’t published by the café itself, so check before you travel.
