The Gordon Highlanders Museum

The museum of the Gordon Highlanders in Aberdeen, telling 200 years of the regiment's story in the former home of the painter Sir George Reid, with a café and garden.

In a quiet street in Aberdeen's west end, a white Victorian house among lawns and trees holds the story of one of Scotland's most famous regiments.

The Gordon Highlanders were raised in the north-east, and for two hundred years they fought in almost every British campaign.

The museum tells their story through the things they left behind: uniforms and kilts, weapons and medals, maps and letters, and a trench recreated as it was in the First World War. Figures in full dress stand in the galleries, and in the house's grand dining room, portraits of officers look down on a long table set as if for a regimental dinner.

There is a café on the ground floor with tables out in the garden, and most of the galleries can be reached by lift or ramp. The museum opens Tuesday to Saturday. Johnston Gardens, a lovely hidden garden, is next door.
