Ocho is a café on the Forth and Clyde Canal at Speirs Wharf, in part of the original building of 1851, a long stone warehouse above the water a short walk up the hill from the city centre.

Tables sit out on the cobbles overlooking the canal and the moored boats, and inside it is bright and friendly, with stone walls, wooden tables and dried flowers hanging from the ceiling.

It is a licensed brunch, lunch and cocktail place, and the food is made fresh in house by its own chefs, on a menu that changes with the seasons. Expect plates like halloumi and black pudding stacked on sourdough with fried eggs, or spiced lentils and crispy kale on toast. There are pancakes piled with fruit, coffee and pots of tea. Ocho is very dog friendly, with a menu and treats of its own for dogs. There is parking, and an intercom at the door: press 8, ocho in Spanish, then the bell. It opens from nine to four, closed on Tuesday, and booking is advised.
